Helpston Stores and Post Office

Helpston Post Office & General Store

Operating from the same premises for over 100 years (although modernised a number of times over that period!) Helpston Stores is a focal point of village life.

The shop sells a wide variety of groceries and household items including freshly baked bread, is an off-licence and a newsagent. The modern Post Office branch provides cash withdrawal, travel and insurance services as well as the traditional posting facilities.

The shop is located in the centre of the village, opposite the village green on West Street. It is open from 0730-1900 Monday to Friday, 0800-1900 Saturday, and from 0900-1200 on Sunday.

The 1889 Ordnance Survey map shows the post office where it is today. It is not entirely clear when it was established. A directory entry for 1876 does not show a postmaster, although a Mr Henry Shillaker is listed as baker, draper and grocer and may have well occupied the premises at that date. Kelly’s 1898 Directory lists as Mr Young as Postmaster, as well as baker, draper and grocer.

Stamford Stone Company

Stamford Stone Company

Since our formation in 1997 we have established ourselves as one of the country’s leading suppliers of limestone products for the construction industry.

Our aim at the start was to supply high quality limestone walling and cut stone products to developers of executive housing. Through time and constant re-investment in high quality and technologically advanced production facilities, we have been able to expand our product range. Probably our most significant investment was the purchase of the famous Clipsham Medwells Limestone Quarry. This has guaranteed our supply of the finest quality limestone, and also enables us to offer block stone to the stonemasonry industry.

Our commitment to quality has been recognised by the British Standards Institute, we are the only* natural building stone producer to be granted a British Standard Institute Kitemark licence for our products which are manufactured to conform to BS EN 771- 6 : 2005, an achievement we are extremely proud of!

Anna and Graham Kinnaird established Annakinn in Helpston in 1986, specialising in picture restoration, gilding and conservation framing.

In 1990 the business purchased the then redundant fish and chip shop in West Street and transformed it into a gallery and framing studio. On display is a mix of paintings, maps and prints (old and new) many of local interest and with a link to John Clare and the countryside. An exhibition is held every summer to coincide with the John Clare Festival.

Open: Wednesday – Saturday 1200-1700 or by appointment.

The Alfresco team has more than 40 years experience in the horticulture and construction industry that ensures that any conceived idea can be turned into reality with the care, attention to detail and streamlined project management for which Alfresco has become known.

Designer and director Alastair Peat works on the premise that people deal with people and this ensures the Alfresco experience is one of enjoyment on both sides. Designing and constructing gardens for friends and family around other work gave him the ideal background for the business.

Alastair graduated from Loughborough University with a degree in engineering and followed a career in project management in the petrochemical and power generation industries honing his skills in supplier management, customer care, logistics and turning an idea into reality.

He stepped out of this field to set up Alfresco to enjoy the excitement of creating enjoyable spaces for people to relax in their own gardens and to help them maintain them for years to come.
